Out-of-Control General Assembly Makes a Mockery of Good Government
Vote trading and crucial mistake leave no confidence in fracking decision
RALEIGH – News reports from last night make it clear, North Carolina lawmakers did not intend to overturn a gubernatorial veto on the bill to allow fracking in North Carolina. Charlotte Democrat Becky Carney cast the deciding vote by accident, hitting the green button instead of red. When she approached Speaker Tillis immediately after recognizing the mistake, Tillis would not allow her to change her vote.
On top of that, news reports also make it clear that Wilmington Democrat Susi Hamilton traded her vote for $60 million in tax incentives for the film industry.
“Yesterday’s actions leave no confidence in the House vote on fracking. The actions of Speaker Tillis and his Republican leadership are one more example of how they use out-of-control tactics to achieve their extreme agenda,” said Gerrick Brenner, Executive Director of Progress North Carolina. “North Carolina simply cannot trust the NC House anymore. It is no longer a deliberative body, beholden to voters. It is a free-for-all for the radical right.”
