North Carolina Among Highest in Nation for Layoffs
Despite Governor McCrory's much touted 'Carolina Comeback', the numbers continue to prove the opposite is true. A new report shows that North Carolina lead the entire South in layoffs in June and has outpaced every state besides Florida in total layoffs in 2014. From the article,
Mass layoffs, like that of Microsoft jettisoning 18,000 workers, were a frequent occurrence of the past, but in North Carolina it appears to be a reality of the present, as job cuts continued to be widespread in June.
According to a report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, North Carolina had the largest number of planned job cuts of all Southern states in June, with 1,494 layoffs. Its year-to-date figure of 7,559 job cuts was only behind Florida.
Still, North Carolina as a whole did not follow the overall slow pace of job-cutting most sectors experienced. After climbing to a 15-month high in May, planned job cuts announced by U.S.-based employers in June dropped 41 percent to 31,434, and the job-cutting pace across the nation is down 5 percent from a year ago.
