North Carolina’s sixth Republican voting law to be found unconstitutional in as many months

Progress NC Action released the following statement on Thursday in response to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that North Carolina’s legislative maps were illegally gerrymandered based on race:

“This is only the latest example of North Carolina Republicans illegally disenfranchising African-American voters through gerrymandering and voter suppression,” said Gerrick Brenner, executive director of Progress NC Action. “Politicians in Raleigh have waged an all-out war on democracy in order to maintain their stranglehold on state government and have spent millions of taxpayer dollars to defend their unconstitutional laws. These racist attempts at voter suppression must end.”

Meanwhile, a district court judge will decide in January whether to strike down a law gerrymandering Greensboro City Council districts to benefit Republicans.
